Growing Veggies from the Windowsill™ – Week 6: Tommy’s Harvest Celebration!
What an amazing journey it has been! 🌱🎉 During Week 6, our Junior Urban Gardeners celebrated the final adventure of Growing Veggies from the Windowsill™ with “Tommy’s Harvest Celebration!”
After six weeks of planting, learning, tasting, exploring, and growing, our young gardeners brought everything together as they learned about harvesting fresh foods, garden-to-table nutrition, reducing food waste, sharing with others, and building healthier communities.
From our youngest Garden Explorers to our Urban Garden Academy leaders, participants reflected on their journey, celebrated the progress of their plants, and discovered that gardening is about much more than growing vegetables—it teaches patience, responsibility, science, healthy living, leadership, and community.
🌱 Week 6 Message: We planted. We learned. We grew. Now we celebrate!
We are incredibly proud of our young gardeners and can’t wait to see how the seeds planted during this program continue to grow—in their gardens, their families, and their communities. 💚🌻🍅

Growing Veggies from the Windowsill™ – Week 5: Sunny Paints a Rainbow!
Our Junior Urban Gardeners brought color, nutrition, and healthy choices together during Week 5 with “Sunny Paints a Rainbow!”
Throughout this week’s adventure, children explored why eating a variety of colorful fruits and vegetables is an important part of a healthy lifestyle. Our younger gardeners learned to “eat the rainbow,” while our older Garden Explorers and Urban Garden Academy participants investigated nutrients, balanced meals, food access, and the connection between urban gardening and healthier communities.
The children also continued checking the progress of their plants, recording their observations, and discovering how foods grown in gardens can travel from seed to plant to plate.

Growing Veggies from the Windowsill™ – Week 4: Buzz Saves the Garden! 🐝🌼
Our Junior Urban Gardeners had another exciting adventure during Week 4 as they joined Buzz the Bee to discover the important role pollinators play in helping our gardens and food supply thrive.
Through age-appropriate, hands-on activities, campers learned about bees, butterflies, pollination, biodiversity, and protecting our environment. They also checked the progress of the seeds they planted during Week 3.
Our older Garden Explorers and Urban Garden Academy participants took the adventure even further by exploring the connection between pollinators, urban agriculture, food systems, and community health.
Week 4 Reminder: Even the smallest helpers can make a BIG difference!
Through Growing Veggies from the Windowsill™, we’re planting seeds of nutrition, science, environmental stewardship, and healthy living—one Garden Adventure at a time.

Black Nurses Rock DMV Chapter was honored to serve as the Official First Aid Station for the 2026 So What Else Youth Summer Olympics at Anacostia Park. This inspiring community event brought together young people from across the Washington, DC metropolitan area for a day filled with Olympic-style games, creative activities, wellness, teamwork, and fun.
Our volunteer nurses were on-site throughout the day providing first aid for minor scrapes, bumps, bruises, and other playground injuries. Equipped with colorful character bandages, ice packs, first aid supplies, and compassionate care, our team helped ensure that every child could safely get back to enjoying the day’s activities.
Together, we are building healthier communities—one child, one family, and one event at a time.

Week three marked an exciting milestone as each child officially became a Junior Urban Gardener by planting their very own vegetable seed. Campers learned about the life cycle of a plant, seed germination, and the essential elements plants need to grow, including soil, water, sunlight, air, and care. They also began their Garden Journals, where they will observe, record, and celebrate the growth of their plants throughout the program.

Our young gardeners learned that healthy living involves more than just eating fruits and vegetables. Through engaging discussions and activities, they explored the importance of drinking water, staying physically active, getting enough sleep, and practicing healthy daily habits. Campers also created healthy snacks while discovering how everyday choices support strong bodies and healthy minds.

"Cultivating Healthy Habits,
One Seed at a Time"
This summer, Black Nurses Rock DMV Chapter is proud to partner with So What Else and the University of the District of Columbia (UDC) College of Agriculture, Urban Sustainability & Environmental Sciences (CAUSES) to inspire the next generation of healthy leaders through our Growing Veggies from the Windowsill™ youth gardening and nutrition program.
Designed for children ages 5–14, this interactive six-week experience combines gardening, nutrition education, STEM learning, healthy cooking, and hands-on activities to teach children where healthy food comes from and how small, healthy choices can make a big difference.
Participants explore exciting adventures with our Garden Friends, plant and care for their own vegetables, prepare nutritious recipes, learn about pollinators and sustainability, and discover how gardening can improve personal health and strengthen communities.
Through storytelling, science, and hands-on learning, our Junior Urban Gardeners are developing confidence, responsibility, leadership skills, and a lifelong appreciation for healthy living.
At Black Nurses Rock DMV, we believe every child has the potential to grow, lead, and thrive—because every great garden begins with one tiny seed.
